What Is the External Nutrition Bag (ENB) Method in Commercial Morel Cultivation?

The External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method is a supplementation technique for commercial morel (Morchella) cultivation in which nutrients are supplied in a separate bag placed against the outside of the substrate, rather than being mixed into the soil or compost. The morel mycelium colonises the bag and draws from it gradually, giving the crop a concentrated, staged feed as fruiting approaches. The method was invented in Sichuan, China, in 2000 and is now widely used across the region's commercial morel farms.

The logic behind ENB is simple. Morels need a significant nutritional boost to fruit well indoors or in tunnels, but rich supplements mixed directly into the substrate invite competitor moulds, cause overheating and are difficult to dose evenly. Keeping the nutrition in its own bag means it can be prepared, sterilised and added on a schedule, so the mycelium is already strong and dominant when the extra food becomes available. Feed timing, not feed quantity, is what separates good and mediocre results.

In practice, a commercial ENB programme comes down to four decisions: • Bag weight, matched to bed density and to how much nutrition the base substrate already carries. Automatic ENB bagging machines fill 300 g to 1,000 g per bag. • Placement timing, which normally follows full colonisation of the substrate; bags added too early are captured by competitors before the morel mycelium can take them. • Density, meaning how many bags per bed or per square metre, set by target crop load rather than by habit. • Record-keeping: bag date, bag weight and placement density per bed are the three numbers that make a season repeatable.

Hand bagging is where most farms hit a ceiling. A few thousand bags a day consumes a crew, and hand-filled bags vary in weight, which shows up later as uneven fruiting. The fourth-generation ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine runs at 30 to 50 bags per minute, equivalent to 1,800 to 3,000 bags per hour, on 220V/50Hz at 1.5 kW, weighs around 380 kg, and replaces 15 to 25 workers. That output is what allows a farm to add nutrition bags across large blocks in a single day instead of spreading the operation over a week.

Hygiene around the nutrient bag deserves as much attention as the substrate itself. Nutrient mixes are wet and rich, so sterilisation has to be complete and even. High-pressure autoclaves operating at 105, 115 or 121 °C, with chambers up to 76 m³ and forklift drive-in loading, plus 304 or 316 stainless steel options, let growers treat nutrient loads and substrate on the same cycle standard. Skipping that step to save time is one of the most common causes of patchy colonisation.

ENB also changes climate requirements, because feeding pushes the crop toward fruiting. Indoor edible mushroom IoT smart cabins in 20FT and 40FT formats hold 4 to 28 °C at plus or minus 0.5 °C, 70 to 98 percent relative humidity and CO2 between 400 and 2000 ppm, with remote monitoring so bagging and placement dates can be aligned with the climate curve. In outdoor and tunnel systems, ultrasonic micro-fogging at 3 to 10 µm and 12 to 30 L/h, plus UV-stabilised HDPE shade netting at 75, 85 or 90 percent, does the same job of holding a stable microclimate after feeding.

The mistakes that show up most often in new operations: • Mixing strong nutrient supplements straight into the substrate instead of using a separate bag. • Placing bags before the substrate has fully run white. • Accepting inconsistent hand-filled bag weights instead of machine-filled ones. • Sterilising the substrate carefully but treating the nutrient mix casually. • Scaling bag numbers without matching spawn: one spawn tube inoculates 667 m², or one mu.

Sichuan Morel Research Institute Co., Ltd. (www.cn-localfoods.com), founded in 2010 in the birthplace of commercial morel cultivation, developed the ENB method and runs demonstration and manufacturing operations at Anxian (around 300 acres) and Luojiang (around 1,200 acres), with more than 50 hectares of outdoor demo fields and a 12,000 m² equipment workshop. The institute holds ISO 9001:2015 and CE machinery safety certification and has supplied equipment and training to more than 25 countries, including projects in France's Rhône-Alpes, Turkey's Isparta and MuÄŸla, and Spain's Andalusia. Its English-medium Online Morel Cultivation Masterclass is offered at Class A $5,000 and Class B $10,000, and turnkey farm design covers 1 to 50+ hectares.
