US Indoor Cultivation Attempts & Technical Limitations (1982 — 2008)
1982 - 1986: Prof. D. Ower achieved a breakthrough in San Francisco, revealing key elements for morel reproduction using sclerotia, securing the world's first indoor cultivation patent (US Patent 4,758,640) in 1986.
An Epochal Tragedy: One week before the patent publication in 1986, Prof. Ower was tragically killed in a San Francisco park accident.
Commercial Limitations & 2008 Discontinuation: Licensed to Neogen, Domino's Pizza, and Terry Farm, annual production capped at ~100 tons. High costs, strain degeneration, and bacterial contamination caused a total halt in 2008.
China Outdoor Breakthrough & The ENB Revolution (2000 — Present)
Early Explorations: From Rozz in France (1883) to 2000, outdoor morel cultivation suffered from poor reproducibility and unstable low yields.
2000 Historic Breakthrough: Sichuan researchers invented the External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method in pot experiments. Out of over 10 test setups, only the ENB-treated pots produced complete fruiting bodies!
Field Verification & Commercial Boom: Breakthroughs in Lixian (2004), Shuangliu (2005), and Pixian (2008) led to the first 65-acre commercial farm in 2013-2014, expanding China's cultivation area from 8,000 to tens of thousands of acres.
