How to Mix Morel Substrate at Scale: Moisture, Batch Size and Cycle Time
The short answer: mix morel substrate at roughly 60β65% moisture, in batches sized to your daily bagging target, with a 5β8 minute mixing cycle that produces a uniform, crumbly mix with no dry pockets. Most problems at this stage are not caused by the recipe but by inconsistent moisture and uneven blending, which later show up as patchy colonization or contamination. Getting the mixer specification right is one of the cheapest quality controls you will ever buy.
In commercial Morchella cultivation, the substrate has to serve two jobs: it forms the bed structure, and β in the External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method invented in Sichuan in 2000 β it also feeds the nutrition bags that drive yield. Both need the same physical consistency. If half the pile is dust-dry and the other half is a wet clump, bags will differ in weight, colonization speed and contamination risk, and the whole downstream schedule becomes guesswork.
