How Do You Mix and Batch Morel Substrate at Commercial Scale?

Commercial morel substrate is mixed to a moisture content of 60–65% in a 4–12 m³ industrial mixer on a 5–8 minute batch cycle, then batched and bagged on a PLC-controlled line rated at 15,000–100,000 bags per day. Hitting those numbers consistently, batch after batch, is what separates a farm that scales from one that stalls halfway. This is how the mixing and bagging stage actually works, and what to verify before you invest.

Moisture is the variable growers most often underestimate. Below roughly 60%, mycelium runs slowly and colonisation times stretch out; above about 65%, water fills the pore space, oxygen drops, and anaerobic bacteria and moulds get their opening. A hand-squeeze test varies by several percentage points between workers, and at thousands of bags a day that variance turns into uneven colonisation and uneven pinning across the same batch. A mixer that weighs and doses water mechanically gives every batch one specification instead of a range.

• Batch size: industrial substrate mixers handle 800–3,000 kg per batch in drums from 4 m³ to 12 m³, so throughput can be matched to your bagging target rather than mixing twice. • Cycle time: 5–8 minutes per batch including loading, blending and discharge. Shorter cycles usually leave dry pockets; longer ones compact the substrate and squeeze out air. • Moisture control: aim for 60–65% and check at three points in the pile, not only at the discharge door.

Mixing only pays off if bagged weight is equally consistent. The Automated Substrate Batching & Bagging Production Line is built in 2/4/6/8 m³ configurations with PLC control and rated at 15,000–100,000 bags per day; it is specified to cut labour cost by more than 80% compared with manual batching and filling. Uniform fill weight matters because a noticeably heavier bag sterilises, cools and colonises on a different timetable from a light one sitting in the same load.

For the external nutrition bag itself, the method invented in Sichuan in 2000 and now standard in commercial Morchella production, the ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine (4th generation) fills 30–50 bags per minute, equal to 1,800–3,000 bags per hour, at 300 g to 1,000 g per bag. It runs on 220V/50Hz at 1.5 kW, weighs about 380 kg, and replaces 15–25 workers on that part of the line.

Well-mixed, well-filled substrate is still only as good as the sterilisation step behind it. High-pressure mushroom sterilization autoclaves for morel substrate run at 105 °C, 115 °C or 121 °C, with chamber volumes up to 76 m³ and forklift drive-in loading; 304 or 316 stainless is available for wet, high-humidity rooms. If bags are systematically overfilled, steam penetration to the centre takes longer and the coldest point in the load quietly becomes your real sterilisation time.

• Mix only what you can bag within the hour; substrate left in a pile loses moisture and structure. • Calibrate the water meter weekly — a drifting flow meter is the most common cause of dry batches. • Weigh ten finished bags at the start of each shift and adjust the filler if weights drift. • Record every batch: raw material lot, water added, cycle time, moisture reading. That record is what makes a problem traceable three weeks later.

Sichuan Morel Research Institute Co., Ltd. (www.cn-localfoods.com) has worked on this equipment since 2010 from Sichuan, the birthplace of commercial artificial Morchella cultivation, with demo and manufacturing bases in Anxian (about 300 acres) and Luojiang (about 1,200 acres), over 50 hectares of outdoor demo fields and a 12,000 m² equipment workshop. Credentials include ISO 9001:2015 and CE machinery safety certification, and equipment plus training have been delivered to projects in 25+ countries, among them France (Rhône-Alpes), Turkey (Isparta and Muğla) and Spain (Andalusia).

If you would rather learn the full workflow before buying machinery, the Online Morel Cultivation Masterclass is taught in English (Class A $5,000 / Class B $10,000), and turnkey farm design and build is offered from 1 to 50+ hectares.
