How Do You Mix Morel Substrate to the Right Moisture Before Sterilization?

The short answer: aim for 60–65% moisture content in the mixed substrate, and run a full 5–8 minute mixing cycle in an industrial substrate mixer before the material goes to bagging and sterilization. At commercial scale that means working in batches of roughly 800–3,000 kg using mixers in the 4–12 m³ range, not shovels and a garden hose. This single number often decides whether bags colonise evenly or stall in the first two weeks.

Why moisture is the first variable to control. Below about 60%, the substrate feels dry and crumbly, spawn runs slowly and mycelium never fills the bag evenly. Above roughly 65%, the substrate compacts, air pockets collapse, and the wet centre of a bag is exactly where souring and contamination begin. Because morel substrate is usually a loose blend of agricultural by-products and additives, water does not distribute itself — it has to be driven mechanically through the pile, then checked again after every adjustment.

Matching mixer size to your daily target. The right mixer is sized to a batch you can actually bag and sterilize within one working shift. The Sichuan Morel Research Institute builds industrial substrate mixers with working volumes from 4 m³ up to 12 m³, handling about 800–3,000 kg per batch on a 5–8 minute cycle. That lets a yard pre-wet, mix and discharge continuously through the day instead of pushing everything into one slow daily batch.

A practical mixing sequence for a commercial yard: • Pre-wet the dry ingredients and let them rest, so water soaks into the material instead of running off it. • Load in a fixed order — coarse structural material first, finer additives after — so nothing clumps at the bottom of the drum. • Mix for the full cycle time your line is calibrated for; cutting this short is the most common cause of uneven bags. • Test moisture at three points in the discharged pile, adjust with water or dry material, then re-mix briefly. • Discharge straight into the bagging hopper while the batch is still uniform.

From mixer to bag. The ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine (4th generation) runs 30–50 bags per minute, or 1,800–3,000 bags per hour, at 300 g–1,000 g per bag. It operates on 220 V/50 Hz at 1.5 kW and weighs around 380 kg, and is designed to replace 15–25 workers. For bigger sites, an automated substrate batching and bagging production line covers 2/4/6/8 m³ configurations and 15,000–100,000 bags per day under PLC control, cutting labour cost by more than 80%.

Sterilization and cooling come next. Well-mixed wet substrate still has to be sterilized before inoculation. High-pressure mushroom sterilization autoclaves run at 105 °C, 115 °C or 121 °C, with chamber volumes up to 76 m³ and fork-lift drive-in loading; 304 or 316 stainless steel is available where corrosion resistance matters. Let bags cool fully to inoculation temperature — warm bags stress spawn and invite recontamination.

After inoculation the crop moves into the climate stage. Edible mushroom IoT smart cabins in 20FT or 40FT formats hold 4–28 °C at ±0.5 °C, 70–98% relative humidity and CO2 between 400 and 2,000 ppm, with remote IoT monitoring so a grower sees a drift before it becomes a loss. Ultrasonic micro-fogging units (3–10 µm droplets, 12–30 L/h) raise humidity without soaking the substrate surface, which is what you want once primordia appear.

Spawn and support. One spawn tube inoculates 667 m² (one mu). For growers moving from a pilot shed to a real business, the institute offers turnkey farm design and build from 1 to 50+ hectares, the Online Morel Cultivation Masterclass (Class A $5,000 / Class B $10,000, English medium), and fresh or dried Morchella produce at under 12% moisture plus OEM canned gift boxes. Founded in 2010 in Sichuan — the birthplace of commercial artificial morel cultivation and of the External Nutrition Bag method invented there in 2000 — the institute operates demo and manufacturing bases at Anxian (~300 acres) and Luojiang (~1,200 acres), with 50+ hectares of outdoor demo fields and a 12,000 m² equipment workshop. It holds ISO 9001:2015 and CE Machinery Safety certification, and has delivered equipment and training to projects in 25+ countries, including France (Rhône-Alpes), Turkey (Isparta/Muğla) and Spain (Andalusia).
