What Is the External Nutrition Bag Method for Morel Cultivation and Why Does It Matter?

The External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method is a commercial morel cultivation technique in which a small bag of sterilized nutrient substrate is placed on the soil after Morchella mycelium has colonized the bed. It supplies an extra, protected energy source that supports sclerotia formation and fruiting, rather than depending only on the initial soil substrate. For growers trying to make morel harvests repeatable, ENB is one of the most important innovations from Sichuan, the birthplace of artificial morel farming.

The method was first developed in Sichuan in 2000 and is closely linked to the Sichuan Morel Research Institute, founded in 2010 and now exporting equipment and training to more than 25 countries. The institute runs demonstration and manufacturing bases in Anxian covering about 300 acres and Luojiang covering about 1,200 acres, with more than 50 hectares of outdoor trial fields and a 12,000 square metre equipment workshop. That field background matters because ENB has been tested in commercial projects from France Rhône-Alpes to Turkey Isparta/Muğla and Spain Andalusia, not only in a laboratory.

The practical reason growers use external nutrition bags is that morel mycelium can colonize a bed well but still fail to fruit if energy reserves are too low. The nutrition bag delivers a high-quality food source at the soil surface zone where primordia form, helping farmers get more consistent fruiting across a field and reducing the risk of a good mycelial run with no mushrooms.

For a small plot, bags can be filled by hand, but at commercial scale that becomes a labor bottleneck. The institute's fourth-generation ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine fills 30 to 50 bags per minute, or roughly 1,800 to 3,000 bags per hour, with bag weights adjustable from 300 g to 1,000 g. It runs on 220 V/50 Hz, draws 1.5 kW, weighs about 380 kg, and is designed to replace 15 to 25 workers.

The bagging step usually sits inside a wider substrate line. The Automated Substrate Batching and Bagging Production Line is available in 2, 4, 6 or 8 cubic metre configurations, producing from 15,000 to 100,000 bags per day with PLC control and cutting labor cost by more than 80 percent. For growers mixing nutrition formulas in-house, the Industrial Substrate Mixer handles 4 to 12 cubic metres, processes 800 to 3,000 kg per batch in 5 to 8 minutes, and maintains 60 to 65 percent moisture.

A typical ENB workflow follows these steps: • Sterilize the nutrition bag substrate in a high-pressure mushroom sterilization autoclave at 105, 115 or 121 °C, with chambers up to 76 cubic metres and forklift drive-in loading. • Fill and seal bags with an ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine at 30 to 50 bags per minute, using 300 g to 1,000 g per bag. • Inoculate the soil beds with morel mycelium or spawn tubes, where one tube covers 667 square metres or 1 mu. • After the soil mycelium has established, apply the external nutrition bags at the recommended spacing and maintain stable field moisture and shade.

To support the method, the institute also supplies morel mycelium and spawn tubes, UV shade netting at 75, 85 or 90 percent shade, and IoT climate control for indoor ENB trials. New growers can take the Online Morel Cultivation Masterclass in English at Class A for $5,000 or Class B for $10,000.
