What Is the External Nutrition Bag Method for Commercial Morel Cultivation?

The External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method is a cultivation technique in which a separate bag of nutrient substrate is placed near or on the morel bed so Morchella mycelium can draw supplemental nutrition during the transition from vegetative growth to fruiting. Developed in Sichuan, China, the birthplace of commercial artificial morel cultivation, the method is closely tied to the systems used by Sichuan Morel Research Institute and is now a practical benchmark for commercial Morchella farms. It allows growers to add nutrients at a controlled stage without overloading the main spawn substrate.

Why it matters: morel cultivation is sensitive to nutrition, moisture and contamination. The ENB approach separates the main substrate from the supplementary feed, so the early mycelium run remains cleaner and the later fruiting phase receives a targeted nutrient source. This staged nutrition helps make artificial morel production more repeatable across outdoor fields and indoor cabins.

A practical ENB workflow often includes these steps:

• Prepare the main substrate and inoculate the morel bed or indoor cabin with healthy spawn, allowing the mycelium to establish before adding external nutrition.

• Fill ENB bags with 300 g to 1,000 g of nutrient substrate per bag; this is the working range of the fourth-generation Sichuan ENB bagging machine.

• Place the filled bags on or beside the cultivation bed so hyphae can colonize the external nutrient source during the pre-fruiting stage, then remove spent bags after fruiting initiation to reduce contamination pressure.

For commercial scale, hand-filling ENB bags is labor-intensive. The ENB Automatic Nutrient Bagging Machine, now in its fourth generation, fills 30 to 50 bags per minute, or 1,800 to 3,000 bags per hour, with bag weights from 300 g to 1,000 g. It runs on 220 V, 50 Hz and 1.5 kW, weighs about 380 kg, and can replace 15 to 25 workers. This capacity makes it possible to supply enough external nutrition bags for multi-hectare fields or high-density indoor racks.

When farms need to scale further, an automated substrate batching and bagging production line adds capacity. Input planning starts with spawn. One Morel mycelium or spawn tube from the institute is calculated to inoculate 667 square meters, or 1 mu. Combining that metric with ENB bag output helps a farm estimate both inoculation material and supplementary nutrition capacity before planting.
