What Is the External Nutrition Bag (ENB) Method in Commercial Morel Farming?

The External Nutrition Bag (ENB) method is a commercial Morchella cultivation technique in which sterilised nutrient bags are placed in the soil beside the inoculated bed, so the morel mycelium draws nutrition through the casing layer instead of from supplements mixed into the bulk substrate. It was developed in Sichuan, China in 2000 — the region where commercial artificial morel farming began — and it remains the foundation of dependable large-scale morel production. The method exists because supplementing the entire substrate with grain or bran almost always invites mould and competitor fungi before the morels can colonise.

In a traditional supplemented-substrate system, nutrition is everywhere at once: Trichoderma, bacteria and weed moulds get the same free meal as the morel mycelium, and the bed heats up as everything decomposes. ENB changes the geometry of feeding. The bulk substrate stays lean and relatively clean, while nutrition is released slowly from separate, sterilised bags along the edge of the mycelial front. The grower controls how much food is available and when — which is why the approach became standard for both outdoor and shed-based commercial production.

• Spawn first: one spawn tube is typically enough to inoculate 667 m² (one mu) of prepared bed, depending on spawn vigour and bed width.

• Prepare a lean bulk substrate — evenly mixed, well drained, with moisture held at roughly 60–65%.

• Place ENB bags only after the mycelium has visibly run through the casing layer; placing them too early is the single most common mistake.

• Hold steady humidity and soil temperature, and remove or replace bags as colonisation progresses.

• Harvest in flushes, then clean the bed before the next cycle.

At scale, the labour sits in the bags, not the beds. A commercial ENB operation handles very large numbers of nutrient bags each cycle, with individual bag weights from 300 g to 1,000 g. A 4th-generation ENB automatic nutrient bagging machine fills 30–50 bags per minute — 1,800 to 3,000 bags per hour — and typically replaces 15–25 workers on that task alone, running on 220V/50Hz at 1.5 kW and weighing about 380 kg.

Upstream of bagging, substrate quality decides whether ENB works at all. An industrial substrate mixer rated 4–12 m³ handles 800–3,000 kg per batch in a 5–8 minute cycle and produces the even moisture that prevents both dry pockets and sour, waterlogged beds. Bags and substrate then pass through a high-pressure sterilization autoclave at 105, 115 or 121 °C — units run up to 76 m³ with forklift drive-in loading, in 304 or 316 stainless steel — because a contaminated bag is worse than no bag at all.

After placement, the crop responds to climate more than to anything else. In an edible mushroom IoT smart cabin (20FT or 40FT), growers hold 4–28 °C to within ±0.5 °C, 70–98% relative humidity and CO2 between 400 and 2,000 ppm, with remote monitoring so a fault becomes visible before it turns into a lost flush. Ultrasonic micro-fogging at 3–10 µm and 12–30 L/h lifts humidity without wetting the caps, while UV-stabilised shade netting (75/85/90%, HDPE with 3% UV, 5–8 years of service) protects outdoor ENB beds from heat spikes.

Most ENB failures come down to timing and water: bags placed before the mycelium is established, casing kept too wet, or substrate mixed at the wrong moisture. Growers who get the sequence right — lean substrate, clean bags, patient placement, stable climate — see far more consistent fruiting than those who simply add more supplement.
